After working for 27 years at ArtEZ University of the Arts, I launched Buro DARE in 2024 as a one-man business for education, research, and publications in the fields of (applied) art, design, and design research. Since completing my studies as a product designer at the Arnhem Academy of Art (in the magnificent Gerrit Rietveld building) and as an art historian at Leiden University (specializing in contemporary design), my professional activities have focused on design, design education, and design research. In 2015, I received my PhD for a study on ideology and theory in Dutch design education, which resulted in the publication "Het huis van IK" (The House of I). Since 1997, I have taught design history, design theory, and design research at various design courses, including the Design Academy Eindhoven, Industrial Product Design (IPO) at The Hague University of Applied Sciences and the HAN University of Applied Sciences Arnhem/Nijmegen, ArtEZ Product Design, and the ArtEZ Academy of Architecture. I have also given numerous lectures, workshops, and guest lectures in the field of design research and sustainable design at Radboud University Nijmegen, Wageningen University & Research, and Linnaeus University in Växlö, Sweden. From 2016 to 2024, I was as a professor of applied sciences responsible for the Tactical Design research group at ArtEZ University of the Arts. In this role, I initiated and led numerous small and large research and innovation projects for the sustainable design of clothing and interior products. With my specific design expertise, I have worked as a director and advisor for various organizations, including Ontwerp Platform Arnhem (Design Platform Arnhem), Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Gelderland, Fonds voor de Beeldende Kunsten, Design & Architecture, Raad voor Cultuur (National Dutch Council for Culture), CLICKNL/Innovatienetwerk Creatieve Industrie (Creative Industries Innovation Network), and the Network Applied Design Research (NADR). But my greatest passion is writing about design. As editor-in-chief and author, I have published extensively on design, design education, and design research in consumer and academic journals, books, and catalogs, a significant part of which is compiled in the publication "Dingen doen denken" (coming in January 2026). In 2015 promoveerde ik op een studie naar ideologie en theorie in het Nederlandse vormgevingsonderwijs dat resulteerde in de publicatie Het huis van IK. Sinds 1997 heb ik onderwijs verzorgd in designgeschiedenis, designtheorie en designonderzoek aan diverse ontwerpopleidingen waaronder Design Academy Eindhoven, Industrieel Product Ontwerpen (IPO) van de Haagse Hogeschool en Hogeschool Arnhem/Nijmegen (HAN), ArtEZ Product Design en ArtEZ Academie van Bouwkunst. Daarnaast heb ik tal van lezingen, workshops en gastlessen gegeven op het gebied van ontwerponderzoek en duurzaam ontwerpen onder andere aan Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, Wageningen Universiteit & Research en Linnaeus University in Växlö, Zweden.
Van 2016 tot en met 2024 was ik als lector verantwoordelijk voor de onderzoeksgroep Tactical Design van ArtEZ University of the Arts. In deze functie initieerde en leidde ik tal van kleine en grote onderzoeks- en innovatieprojecten voor het duurzaam ontwerpen van kleding en interieurproducten.
Met mijn specifieke kennis van design heb ik als bestuurder en adviseur gewerkt voor diverse organisaties, waaronder Ontwerp Platform Arnhem (OPA), Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Gelderland, Fonds voor de Beeldende Kunst, Vormgeving & Bouwkunst, Raad voor Cultuur, CLICKNL/Innovatienetwerk Creatieve Industrie en het Network Applied Design Research (NADR).
Maar mijn grootste liefde betreft het schrijven over ontwerpen. Als (hoofd)redacteur en auteur heb ik diverse publicaties op mijn naam staan over design, ontwerponderwijs en ontwerpend onderzoek in publieks- en wetenschappelijke tijdschriften, boeken en catalogi, waarvan een belangrijk deel is gebundeld in de publicatie Dingen doen denken (verschijnt in januari 2026).
